LiftMaster Gate Opener Won't Close

Gate Opener LiftMaster

After a long day of work, you are coming home for the day. You press your remote control to open your gate, and everything runs smoothly until you press the button to close it again. Yikes, your gate is stuck and won't close no matter how many times you press the button again and again! In this case, what do you do? If this has happened to you, LiftMaster offers some easy solutions so it doesn't happen again.

1. Make Sure The Path Of Your Gate Is Clear

Before panicking at your malfunctioning gate, check under the path of your gate for debris, dirt, leaves, or anything you think may be causing your operator not to work. Sometimes gate operators do not work due to some extra objects in the way. Sweep these objects out of the path and see if this works. If this tip does not work, continue to step two.

2. Ensure Hinges And All Parts Are Working

If you use a swing gate opener with wheel bearings, these may have damaged parts. If not, another piece of your slide or swing gate operator may need to be replaced. Look for any broken parts of the operator and even investigate the control board. The control board is the main component making your gate open and close. If this has received water damage, it could be ruined permanently.

3. Investigate The Safety Sensors On Your Gate

Whether using safety sensors or retroreflective photo eyes for your gate, ensure they are aligned correctly. If you have sensors with LED lights for garage openers, unscrew the wing nut, align the sensor until it shows a steady green light, and then secure it again. If you have another safety sensor in place, refer to the user manual to reset the safety device and ensure it works.

4. Make Sure Your Gate Does Not Have Low Battery

If your gate is not responding with a transmitter, it could be due to a loss of power. Check that your gate operator is not displaying a LOW BATT alert or that there is not a loss of AC power. If you use solar power for your gate operator, you must charge the battery before testing again.

5. Loop Detector May Not Be Working Correctly

Adding to safety devices, loop detectors sometimes make the gate operating system malfunction. Make sure all detector inputs are active powering the sensor. Additional timer-to-close settings are also needed for the gate to open and close correctly. Check these settings, too, to see if this is the problem.

If the gate will still not work after investigating all these issues, it is time to call your nearest professional to assess your gate or garage opener. Sometimes, undetected problems could cause your gate not to work correctly.
