How do I power my LiftMaster Actuator Arm without trenching my driveway?

Setting up an Automatic Gate Opener can sometimes be difficult to install as it requires many steps and a lot of effort to ensure that it is setup and functions properly. Checking the gates, wiring, bolting, and especially Trenching can be taxing, however it's important to install each component of your LiftMaster Automatic Gate Opener right so that it lasts as long as possible. However, it's natural to wonder if there's any shortcuts when installing such a large unit to save some time and effort, one such shortcut being if you have to trench your driveway to install your LiftMaster Actuator Arm(s)?

Do you have to Trench to Install a LiftMaster Actuator Arm?

Technically speaking, no, you do not have to Trench your driveway to install the Actuator Arms as both the arms and their wiring is done externally on the Gate(s) and Control Box. However, this does NOT exempt you from trenching as there are still two key components that MUST be installed underground: The Conduit / Power Source & The Loops.

  • The Conduit / Power Source: The Conduit, the power source for all LiftMaster Automatic Gate Openers, needs to be installed underground. This is due to a number of factors including the high voltage wires that would be a large hazard, to prevent wear on those wires, and generally to ensure that your Gate Opener stays connected always.

  • The Loops: The Loops for all LiftMaster Automatic Gate Openers are also required to be installed underground. While not the same high-voltage danger that the conduit presents, the Loops need to be buried underground to apply even pressure across them in order to detect properly. Additionally, next to the Actuators, they are the pieces most likely to wear if used given that vehicles would be driving over them constantly. By burying them, you are extending their lifetime as well as protecting them from wear.

    • IMPORTANT NOTE: If either of the above are not properly trenched/buried, this could void your LiftMaster's Warranty.
